In recent years, many states have enacted reforms to boost housing construction. By doing so, these states hope to address the growing housing affordability crisis. Reforms have included measures to allow a wider variety of housing types in more neighborhoods, measures that have made it legal, for example, to build duplexes, triplexes, and other multifamily buildings in single-family areas. Other state-level reforms have streamlined local permitting processes and eliminated costly regulations, such as parking mandates for residential development. – Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis
