New York Post: “Bribing Homeowners to build tiny houses won’t solve NYC’s housing problem”

Last week, New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation & Development launched a pilot program intended to help homeowners build new ADUs. The city will loan as many as 15 single-family-home owners up to $395,000 each under this pilot program, the loan proceeds to be used to build a rent-restricted ADU on each property. The problem with this plan, according to Howard Husock of the American Enterprise Institute, is that it’s an expensive way to produce very little housing. Rather than “bribing” homeowners to build relatively few ADUs, the city should, Husock argues, follow California’s lead and simply eliminate regulations that stymie ADU construction. – New York Post
