The California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) released an audit report yesterday condemning San Francisco’s housing policies. According to HCD, San Francisco has more barriers to building housing than any other city in the state. As a result, building housing in San Fracisco takes longer and costs more than anywhere else in the California. The report outlines 18 steps that San Francisco must take to streamline its housing approval and permitting processes. If the city fails to adopt these “required actions,” the state could withhold funding from the city and revoke its authority to regulate housing development altogether. – The New York Times
